A Woodworking Magazine Top 40 Book

Now revised and expanded with 32 pages of color and an updated resources section, this 70,000-copy international bestseller, known as the ‘Bible of canoe building’ is back, bigger and better than ever.

Ted Moores is a master builder of woodstrip/epoxy canoes. Over four decades teaching wooden-boat construction, he discovered that the same dream motivates all of his students, no matter their age: to build something beautiful and functional.

Canoecraft is the road map to that dream. Moores offers comprehensive instructions for the first-time builder, and for the second-time builder. He adds a variety of canoe plans, each presented as a traditional table of offsets. There is also a series of builder’s tips and techniques, and an entire chapter on carving a paddle, the perfect accompaniment to a handcrafted canoe.

Whether the goal is to build a general-purpose recreational canoe, or an efficient modern tripping canoe, or a full-decked fast-cruising canoe with walnut veneer, Canoecraft is the ideal guide to making it happen successfully.

I can say without hyperbole that Ted’s book had changed my life for the better… Building this first Nomad, named Huckleberry, turned out to be one of the most profoundly satisfying notches I have ever added to my belt… Ted stated that my work was exquisite and I literally burst into tears. I managed not to sob, but only just…

If you would start a canoe build using the guidance of Ted’s years of experience and teaching acumen, and you would then finish that canoe, Ted would say the same thing to you, and so would [his partner] Joan and so would I. Your boat, too, shall be exquisite. If you try your level best, and she floats, then by god you have done it right. The only craft more beautiful than the one you have just launched is the next one coming down the chute.

My wife and I wanted a canoe that would handle and paddle as great as it looked. I discovered Bear Mountain Boats and Canoecraft by Ted Moores. I had found my “Bible.”

Thanks to Canoecraft, my constant companion and reference, the construction process was not daunting. At the beginning I was a hobby woodworker with moderate skills. By the end of this nine-month process I was a wiser, more skilled woodworker. The result was a beautiful canoe.

What Canadian outdoors enthusiast frequenting the backwoods of Algonquin Provincial Park doesn’t want to be sporting their very own cedarstrip canoe across the many windswept lakes and portages? It was that mindset that inspired the creation of our beloved 16-foot cedarstrip Prospector borne out of Ted Moores’ Canoecraft bible.

We have since taken it on many an adventure, trip and portage in eastern Ontario and the United States. No matter where we go, our canoe is always the center of attention and endless questions of interest. Our adventure partners always joke that extra time needs to be planned to accommodate the inevitable delays for admirers. Through it all, we have enjoyed our fair share of adventures in the comfort and beauty of our chestnut Prospector. It is our own, homemade, masterpiece of watercraft construction that will last us a lifetime.
